GTA 6 vs GTA 5: Every Confirmed Difference (and the Rumors)

Last updated June 18, 2026 · Based on Rockstar's official site, trailers and press kit

Search "GTA 6 vs GTA 5" and most results will confidently tell you the map is "2.5x bigger" with "700+ enterable buildings." Rockstar has never said either of those things. So here's the honest version: every difference Rockstar has actually confirmed, and then — clearly separated — the big claims everyone repeats that are still just leaks.

The confirmed differences, in one line: a new setting (Leonida/Vice City, not San Andreas), two protagonists instead of three (including the series' first female lead), a modern-day era, current-gen consoles only with no PC version dated, and a more alive open world. Map-size and tech numbers are not confirmed.

1. The setting: Leonida vs San Andreas

GTA 5 was set in Los Santos and Blaine County — Rockstar's version of Southern California, inside the state of San Andreas. GTA 6 leaves the west coast entirely. It's set in Leonida, Rockstar's take on modern Florida, with a new Vice City (a contemporary Miami) at its center.

And it's a whole state, not one city: the officially revealed regions are Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers (an Everglades) and Mount Kalaga. The headline difference isn't "a bigger map" — it's a completely different coast: neon-and-swamp Florida instead of mountains-and-desert California. Full map breakdown here.

2. The protagonists: two, not three

GTA 5 had three playable leads — Michael, Franklin and Trevor — loosely connected, with on-the-fly switching between them. GTA 6 confirms two: Jason and Lucia. Two things make this a real difference, not just a smaller number:

So the design intent is different: GTA 5's switching was about variety; GTA 6's two leads are about a relationship. More on the characters here.

3. The era: 2013 satire vs right now

GTA 5 launched in 2013 and satirized 2013 — the dawn of social media, the financial-crisis hangover. GTA 6 is set in the present. Rockstar's trailers are full of influencers, phone cameras and short-form video. Grand Theft Auto has always skewered its exact moment; GTA 6 simply aims that satire at today's clout-and-content internet instead of 2013's.

4. Platforms & generation

This one trips people up. GTA 5 launched in 2013 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 — last-gen hardware — and only reached newer consoles and PC later. GTA 6 is current-gen only: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version, and — importantly — no PC version has been dated. Full platform breakdown.

That's a genuine, confirmed difference: GTA 5 was built to run on a decade-old console; GTA 6 is built only for SSD-based current-gen machines. One more: the gap between the two games is 13 years (2013 → 2026), the longest wait between mainline GTAs ever.

5. A more alive world

What's confirmed here is what's in the official footage: denser crowds, detailed weather and water, and real wildlife — alligators in the Grassrivers, birds, swamp life. After Red Dead Redemption 2's living ecosystems, the GTA 6 trailers clearly push beyond GTA 5's comparatively static world.

Careful with specifics: you'll see "ray tracing," exact NPC-AI improvements and specific resolution/frame-rate stated as fact. Those are reasonable expectations for a current-gen-only game, but Rockstar has not published them as specs. Treat them as likely, not confirmed.

What's NOT confirmed (the rumors everyone repeats)

Rumor — not confirmed by Rockstar: Some may turn out true — but none can be called a confirmed difference today. The honest summary: GTA 6's world is clearly denser and more advanced; by exactly how much, Rockstar hasn't said.
